Polluting the Social Media Channels: An Opportunity for Public Relations

cork collectionAs social media become more mainstream, there is a real threat that the channels will become just as polluted as the ones from which most consumers are tiring.

As reported in the New York Times Google took another step in that direction today with its Adsense for Video:

Overlay video ad formats have been gaining favor with marketers, as an alternative to the more common and intrusive preroll ads…."

YouTube already has overlays, but this will now extend to other aggregators of video.   In other words, expect to see it everywhere.

One would have to be naive to think that variations and creativity in delivering advertising would stop or even slow.  As much as we love our free social networks and tools the fact remains that they aren't free.

But here is where the art of public relations comes in handy.  Those who learn how to deliver relevant and compelling content will become the winners.  Moreover, those that are trusted resources to the experts who deliver such content are even more valuable.

I said something similar in a comment to a post by new blogger Chris Turner that calls for better writing by public relations professionals.  The post, and Chris Turner's Corporate Communications blog is worth checking out.
