CoolTools: AllTop is a Great Research Tool to Find Blogs in Vertical Markets

The makers of Truemors have launched AllTop, which is a site that claims to aggregate the headlines of “top” blogs in 21 categories, one being a link to POPURLS, which is the site on which AllTop was modeled.

According to the story, the Truemors gang noticed they got as much traffic from POPURLS as from Google.

This got us thinking about other topics that (a) have a large readership and (b) hasn’t been aggregated in an elegant and efficient manner, and we came up with idea of a doing a popurls of celebrity gossip sites. Then one thing led to another: Why not other topics like gaming, sports, politics, Macintosh, fashion, etc.?

I think the site is a great way to start building a list of blogs in the topic areas that AllTop has chosen to cover, though I have no idea how they classify a blog as a “top” blog.

But my favorite has to be the EGOS category. They call this the category of mouths, minds and egos. The list includes some of my friends and colleagues, including, Shel Israel, Brian Solis, Valeria Maltoni, Andy Sernovitz and Brian Oberkirch, among others. It makes me wonder how the ego feed was chosen since many of these people aren't egotistical at all in real life.

Anyway, it shouldn't be your last stop as you put together topical lists of bloggers, but it is a good general resource. Plus, it is fun.
