Blogging Nuns: How Can a Religious Community Participate in Social Media?

Today, I had a great meeting with a community of nuns that hope to reach out to a new generation. They believe social media might be the way. Out of all of the people I have met with recently, this group really “gets it” in that they are inherently looking for a way that they can contribute to the community.

No social media “users” in that crowd.

While meeting with them, I asked my Twitter network, “How can a religious community participate in social media? I have to say that I was impressed and entertained by the answers, and so were the sisters.

Here is what the Twitter network (a community in action) said:

Shannon Whitley
swhitley @kamichat Would love to read tweets from the nuns. What are they doing/thinking? Who are they helping? They make religion…human.

Shannon Whitley
swhitley @kamichat I don't see why nuns couldn't participate like anyone else. SM is about taking a monolith and making it accessible.

Laura P Thomas
LPT @kamichat – seems like an excellent counseling opportunity! SM is all about listening & engaging in conversations, why not religious ones?

Simon Young
audaciousgloop @kamichat religious communities should have the hop on the rest of us – because they're already practising the “community” part

Ricardo G.
ggroovin @kamichat – I guess Twittering during mass is out, right? Seriously, there's typically a community around a church. Could leverage that?

Lauren Vargas
vargasl @kamichat Mission work blog with multiple contributors…

Doug Haslam
DougH @kamichat My church experience growing up was that churches are great at community outreach. Should be a natural. Ok, that's not a “how”

Lauren Vargas
vargasl @kamichat Prayer Circle with Twitter; Podcast interviews with religious members/authorities or in-depth prayer how-to

Rob La Gesse
kr8tr @kamichat – ask them to pray for Twitter's servers ๐Ÿ™‚ about

Mike Keliher
mjkeliher @kamichat We're working with a Catholic group that's doing podcasting as a way to extend reach and share more. They love it.

David Parmet
davidparmet @kamichat beliefnet is a good start but anyone can use social media regardless of religious beliefs ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pistachio Consulting
Pistachio @kamichat tell the nuns about @jnswanson and his blog Levite Chronicles. relevance with a huge capital R

Connie Reece
conniereece @kamichat Tell the sisters I said hello — esp. Sister Michelle if she's there. I owe Randy E. an e-mail. Plz convey my pinkest apologies.

Lauren Vargas
vargasl @kamichat How do you get cooler than that?!
