Identity Campaign: Changing Your Corporate Image

Aside from authoring Communication Overtones, I run a small boutique public relations firm in San Antonio, Texas. When I first started My PR Pro in 2002, I didn't need any marketing. I have been blessed with some great (and steady) clients.

However, I felt it was time to put up some more online real estate (as much as I love “Communication Overtones,” it isn't a business site), and get an identity beyond the tired logo that I designed myself in 2002.

I have an excellent graphics designer and illustrator named Ted Yun develop my new logo (see more of his work on this album) . James Cabrera of Rocket Communications is in the process of designing my website. I currently have a placeholder up until the new one is finished.

The Process of Identity Change

For awhile I wondered if I should change the name, it was hard to say and even harder to give out as an e-mail address, the two PRs are a bit of a tongue twister. I also I wondered if it had become too cutesy for my primary clientele.

When I first started the business, I assumed my market would be small to medium companies with no PR support. I turned out to be wrong. Most of my current clients are very busy public relations professionals that need help with strategy and just getting things done. I like working with them, they understand PR and I can get up-and-running with them very quickly.

So, being a good public relations professionals, I surveyed a number of clients and other top-notch PR professionals about what they thought of the name, and it turns out that they favored My PR Pro, go figure.

I originally chose the name because working from the client side, I had some experiences of bait-and-switch, where a big name agency sold us on their expertise and then their junior staffer proceeded to write press releases that weren't grammatically correct, sending them to the client (me)! I stayed at work that night until about 8 p.m. fixing this expensive agency's work.

My PR Pro is not that kind of agency, we are a partner, and you get what you see. The name says that.

So, have you ever participated in an identity project, for your own company or employer? I would love to hear how you “got the word out” once you had all the pieces in place since. My next step is spreading the word. I will also be bringing you along as I develop the text for the Website and would love your feedback.
