16 Nuggets of Wisdom from Social Media Pros and the Magic of Skittles

Sometimes it feels like social media has lost all of its charm. It feels heavy and hard.

But once in awhile you can be involved in a conversation that connects you with other social media marketing pros in unexpected ways.

This week I had a conversation like this. On Twitter of all places. And of all things, it included a bag of candy.

Bag of Skittles with candies strewn across the bag

Don't get me wrong, I love Twitter. But it moves really fast and often feels like you are being dragged down a raging stream vs. connecting in a conversation with friends.

Yesterday, I was slated to talk with some high school students studying entrepreneurship about how social media connects with marketing. On a whim, just hours before I met with them, I thought it would be fun to get advice from other experts in the field.

There was a possibility that no one would reply in time, or at all. There are always risks with these things. But what actually transpired was a fun and engaging conversation between professionals, and even a guest appearance from a brand.

I had to share it with you, because you should never give up on putting connections before marketing. Read on to hear the advice given to these teens, and swipe some of the ideas for yourself. I know I will.

#1: Practice in a lower stress environment

Get hands-on experience with a personal account. For example, if you’re representing a brand on Instagram, create a personal account there and hone your craft.

— Dennis Shiao (he/him) (@dshiao) October 11, 2021

#2: Find a mentor, practice some more

#justdoit. Of you want to get good at something, do it. Up their personal game and knowledge. Then volunteer to help a non-profit. Use the tools. Then move to paying clients. And #findamentor

#3: Engage with your fans

Social media marketing, if done well, can help establish a stronger and more personalized connection between brands and their fans. Leverage its ability to do that by engaging back (not just pushing out ads).

— Mike Italia 🍫 (@mikeitalia) October 11, 2021

#4: Skittles engages with their fans, prime example here

Well, what would you say to the kids @Skittles? I am sure you would make their day, month, year. They might even choose you for Halloween 🎃

MY SHOUTING TWEETS DO 10% BETTER!!

— SKITTLES (@Skittles) October 11, 2021
Do yourself a favor an pop over to Twitter to see the full Skittles thread 🤣

#5: Gain knowledge and put it into action

My advice is to soak up as much knowledge as possible and then turn around and use it in action. The more you learn and do, the better you'll get it. 😊

— Madalyn Sklar (@MadalynSklar) October 11, 2021

#6: Study brands you admire

Using social media for a brand is very different than a personal account.

Follow the brands you admire and pay attention to their approach and how they use different channels to build connections. Everyone is doing it a little different. Notice what works & what doesn't.

— Christine Johnson (@CJ_250marketing) October 11, 2021

#7: Join more conversations than you start #BeHelpful

Join more conversations than you attempt to start.

Be helpful in all you do.

Talk about your customers (with their permission).

#1: Advice for Social Media Marketers

#8: It's not going to be all roses 🌹

RUN!!! Just kidding! 😉

Social media has immense opportunity to educate, entertain, and engage. Brands CAN have conversations and should with their communities. Be ready for those tough days because they will come. But all in all being a social media marketer is a fun wild ride!

— Anh Nguyen (@AnhTNguyen) October 11, 2021

#9: Trust > Popularity

Make them understand that social media marketing is about building trust and community and not a popularity contest.

— Jim Fuhs #DealcastersLive #SMWL23 (@FuhsionMktg) October 12, 2021

#10: You aren't a brand, you are a person 1st

https://twitter.com/520eastbrands/status/1447612249909104644

#11: Be helpful and interesting

I would tell them that social media marketing is about building relationships and assisting the customers – not about broadcasting all about themselves.

And I tell brands and #smallbusiness the same thing. Don't just share about you, your brand, etc. Be helpful and interesting.

— Gail Gardner (@GrowMap) October 12, 2021

#12: Don't be tone deaf to the outside world

https://twitter.com/Malachi_93/status/1447609174410645509

#13: Don't forget to take conversations offline when warranted

Think short messages, visual messages. Separate personal and client accounts using different tools. Be positive and prepared to take conversations off line

— Shashi Bellamkonda (@shashib) October 11, 2021

#14: Understand what motivates your fans

Social Media Marketing is relationship driven. You need to understand your audiences desires, behaviors, habits and the psycology behind cultivating a loyal brand. #MarketingTwitter https://t.co/vApeNLZnxp

— Christina Jovanna Olivarez (@ChristinaSBG) October 11, 2021

#15: Candy is an unfair advantage, people like gifts 🎁

That reminds me of how popular the session with the scientist from Mars was with 7th and 8th grade girls doing a STEM weekend.

She would toss a bag of candy to the girl who answered her questions correctly.

Her sessions were the most popular. Then mine taking computers apart.

— Gail Gardner (@GrowMap) October 12, 2021

#16: Be consistent with your content, look for opportunities and take them

The biggest piece of advice is to be consistent with your content, be human, engage with your audience and most of all, be open to every opportunity that comes your way. #besocial @kamichat https://t.co/vbxJEJKHNt
